Polyphenols

 What Are Polyphenols?

Polyphenols are a diverse group of naturally occurring micronutrients found in plants. They’re responsible for the vibrant colors, flavors, and defense mechanisms in fruits, vegetables, teas, herbs, and spices. In humans, they act primarily as antioxidants and anti-inflammatories, helping to protect cells from damage and regulate key biological processes.

There are over 8,000 known polyphenols, but they fall into four main categories:

  1. Flavonoids – Found in berries, tea, onions, and dark chocolate. Known for reducing inflammation and supporting heart and brain health.
  2. Phenolic acids – Present in coffee, whole grains, and certain fruits. They help combat oxidative stress.
  3. Polyphenolic amides – Found in chili peppers and oats. These have protective effects on cells.
  4. Lignans and stilbenes – Found in seeds, grains, and red wine. They support hormonal balance and cellular health.

How Polyphenols Work in the Body

Polyphenols are potent antioxidants, meaning they neutralize free radicals—unstable molecules that can damage cells and DNA. This oxidative stress is linked to aging, inflammation, and chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

Beyond their antioxidant role, polyphenols also:

  • Modulate inflammation by downregulating pro-inflammatory enzymes and cytokines
  • Support gut health by acting as prebiotics and promoting beneficial bacteria
  • Enhance brain function by improving blood flow and protecting neurons
  • Improve cardiovascular health by supporting blood vessel flexibility and reducing blood pressure

Polyphenols in Velocity: A Strategic Synergy

Velocity includes polyphenols from green tea, guarana, and green coffee—each bringing unique benefits:

  • Green tea polyphenols (like EGCG): Boost metabolism, protect neurons, and reduce inflammation
  • Guarana polyphenols: Provide sustained energy and cognitive support
  • Green coffee polyphenols (like chlorogenic acid): Help regulate blood sugar and reduce oxidative stress

These polyphenols work in synergy with glutathione, the nootropics, and other antioxidants in Velocity. While polyphenols act quickly to neutralize free radicals, glutathione regenerates them, extending their protective effects. It’s a layered defense system, fast-acting and long-lasting.
